Eyelash extensions are now rife in various beauty centers. Long and thick eyelashes are the dream of most women. During this time many people use mascara as a way to make eyelashes more curved. However, repeated use and long lasting results make eyelash extensions a choice. Eyelash extension is done by wearing artificial eyelashes made from synthetic fibers such as nylon. These artificial eyelashes are attached with glue on the tip of the original eyelashes. This is a procedure that is not easy, even for experienced cosmetologists. This connection is carried out using a long sharp tweezers and a special tech brush with a sheet of adhesive. Cosmetologists will then isolate the original eyelashes one by one, to then connect them to synthetic eyelashes with glue, then hold them for some time to connect properly. Each eye can have 40-100 strands attached, so some eyelashes are needed. This procedure takes about 2-3 hours with no small cost. Eyelash extension with the technique of connecting the eyelashes is semi-permanent and needs to be constantly updated. But there are also eyelash extensions that are done with eyelash transplant surgery procedures, and should only be done by a doctor. In addition, there are also drugs that can be applied to the tips of the eyelids to increase the growth and development of eyelashes becoming thicker, thicker, and darker. This drug called bimatoprost, is used every day for at least two months. Side effects can include dry eyes, red and itchy eyes, and also the eyelids and iris become darker. Until now Bimatoprost has not been included in the list of BPOM in Indonesia.

Risk of Eyelash Extensions

Like all other beauty treatments, there is a risk that lies behind extended eyelashes. Below are a few of them.
  • Inexperienced eyelash extension technicians can cause eye irritation or even serious injury.
  • Eyelash extensions need to be repeated after the original eyelashes date, approximately a few weeks to two months. After a month, generally about 50% of false eyelashes remain. Thus, cosmetologists need to partially reattach to improve the appearance of eyelash extensions.
  • Placing a few false eyelashes on one original eyelash can cause the original eyelashes to fall out faster because the burden is too heavy.
  • The wrong technique can make permanent adhesive can be wrongly placed on the eyelid.
  • Some eyelash extension adhesive glue is thought to contain formaldehyde which can cause allergic reactions in some people, also in those who have sensitive skin.
  • The splicing process can damage the original eyelashes, it can even cause permanent loss.
  • Eyelash extensions can cause allergic reactions, infections of the cornea or eyelids, and swelling of the eyelids.
  • Repeated eyelash installation adds expense and individual time.
To avoid unwanted risks, here are some things you can do before undergoing eyelash extensions.
  • Make sure the place (beauty clinic) installation of eyelash extensions is neat, clean, sterile, and reliable.
  • Make sure the technicians who do the installation are indeed trained and certified.
  • Inform the specific conditions that the installer technician needs to know about the extension, for example if you have a history of eye disease.
  • Make sure you are well informed about the benefits and risks that may arise from eyelash extensions.
  • Look for salons that use quality adhesives, such as the type used to cover wounds instead of stitches.
  • As much as possible choose a product that includes the ingredients contained in it, as well as reports on toxic substances and their safety.
